Margarita Matu Cupul
Our third recipient, Margarita, is starting at the university in Valladolid this Fall, 2010. She will be studying Graphic Design. She has been working at 2 jobs trying to save enough money to further her education. The family is very hardworking and supporting an older brother while he is studying at university. They do not have the funds to assist Margarita as well. We are very pleased to help her to fulfill her dreams. She is an excellent student and surpasses all the scholarship fund criteria.
Update October 2011:
I am Margarita Matú Cupul, I am 20 years old and I’m currently studying Graphic Design at the Universidad de Valladolid Yucatán even though I am from Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo.
I like to take pictures in my free time, I consider myself a dynamic person but above all, I love spending time with my family since we have always been very close and we face everything together, as a family. We live nice but without many pretenses, my parents’ income is quite low because they don’t have a career. Personally, I have always been perseverant in everything I do, since I was very young I had to start working to help my parents and to pay for my education. I take pride in saying that I’ve always had good grades.
It was because of all these and some other reasons that I decided to keep studying, although to be honest, it may have not been possible without this scholarship. My older brother is also studying at the University and neither my parents’ nor my income could allow for both expenses.
I believe that being a professional is of vital importance to my future because that way I can aspire to have a better quality in my life and it will help me expand my culture –and be less ignorant-. That is why I think I have been very lucky in getting this scholarship to help me continue my studies. I know many people would wish for an opportunity like this and unfortunately, they don’t have it.
Studying has let me get a quite different view of the world. I’ve learned many interesting things throughout the year I’ve been here at the University and I hope that I’ll continue to learn more. I love what I am studying and will keep doing it for the rest of my life.
I wanted to take this time to thank all of you that have supported me through your donations, I pray to God to bless not only you but also all of your loved ones. I am positive that what you do today for me, for the ones that you so selflessly help; someone will do for you.
I am very thankful for this opportunity and I guess that the best way to prove it is to commit myself and put in all my best to get the most out of my career and finish it successfully. Day after day, I will remember the support you are giving me and I will pay it forward helping as many people as I can too.
It fills my heart with joy to know there is still people with such noble and big hearts that lend their hands and give without asking anything in return. I wish for this kind of people to multiply and this way we can help more and more people. I know that many more people in this world are in my situation.
May God cover you in blessings, as he is doing for me.
Goodbye, have a great day and THANK YOU!
Margarita Matú Cupul.
Update December 2013:
Dear Mrs. Gwen
I am writing to thank you for the great opportunity you are giving me, because of the monthly support I am able to continue to study and am less than half a year away from finishing my degree.
At the moment I am working on my next to last semester, I am very excited, thanks to God son I will have my degree, that will be useful for the rest of my life.
The years I have been at college have been very useful, every day I enjoy my studies more, I have no regrets to have chosen Grafic Design as my future professión, as I learn new things every day, and I prove to myself I am able to face obstacles and difficulties not only at school by in life in general. I am aware that the actual working life as a Grafic Designer will not be easy to begin with but the knowledge acquired at the university and the experience acquired through the practices and service give me confidence that I will do well.
Grafic Design has many interesting áreas, such as photography, editorial design, publicity design, illustration and more, always looking for creative and innovativeideas to work with. All of thisawakens my curiosity and creativity .
Living away from home saddens me at times for I miss my family terribly, but I know that in the long run this sacrifice will benefit not only me but them too. I only hope I will be able to repay them and you in some way all the support given to me.
Soon I will begin writing my thesis which will be on the Archeological site of Ek Balam, at the moment I am one of the few students that have developed a good formulation of the thesis, and as always I am very dedicated and make the biggest efforts withall my studies to show my appreciation for all the support you give me.
Update October 2014: Congratulate Margarita on completing her degree in Graphic Design. For her thesis, Margarita designed and produced literature and promotional material on the Yucatec-Maya archaeological site, Ek Balam. She recently started working part time for an architect on Isla Mujeres while working as well on her own projects such as a photo shop course she is teaching on the island. She has applied for a position at a new high school.
Update June 2016:
It is almost 2 years I have ended my career as a degree in Graphic Design I am extremely grateful to Ron Brown Scholarship Foundation and all those who contributed so that I can conclude this dream that now is a fact.
I graduated at the top of my class and got a steady job in which I am currently working in an architectural firm where everyday I apply my skills and acquire new ones. I am responsible for the area of design and advertising as well as marketing and photography. I also work freelance in my spare time.
The Ron Brown Scholarship Fund foundation is a hope for many young people and that is why I urge anyone who can support this cause to support young people like me who did not have sufficient resources to complete their studies and create a better future.
My forever gratitude and hope that other young people have the same luck I had to benefit from this foundation.
